Generally, the number of students admitted to UDSM (excluding MUCHS and UCLAS) has maintained a growing trend over the past five years (Table 1). Between 2003/04 and 2006/07 the number of students registered increased by 178%. During 2007/08 the number of students registered fell slightly to 5775.

1.3STUDENT ENROLMENT PROFILES
Undergraduate
The undergraduate student enrolment at UDSM has constantly been increasing during the past five years as shown in Table 4. The departure of MUCHS and UCLAS has had an insignificant effect on overall undergraduate enrolment. The increase ranged from 12,492 in 2003/04 to 17,098 in 2007/08. During the same timeframe the proportion of female students increased from 31% to 37%.

Postgraduate
Table 5 shows that there were 2552 postgraduate students registered at the University in 2007/08. The proportion of female students has remained relatively stable for past three years at 27%-28%. Admission of postgraduate students is a continuous process and therefore their actual numbers vary all the time.

Research Reports
Quality research is finally documented as reports that can be used for future reference. Table 13 shows the number of reports produced at different campuses of the University and the total number for the whole institution. The number of research reports produced declined from 124 in 2003/04 to 69 in 2006/07. On the other hand, in 2007/08, the number of research projects recorded is 122. All these numbers are indicative as mentioned before.

Visits to the library are a good indicator of the use of library services (Table 15). The visits dropped slightly to 744,869 in 2007/08 compared with 801,708 in 2006/07 primarily due to the exclusion of MUCHS and UCLAS from the current consideration.

Availability of Personal Computers (PCs)
A total of 609 PCs (Table 16) were recorded for the academic staff at UDSM in 2007/08. This number is surely on the lower side since practically every academic staff member is in possession of a computer. The number will be updated in due course.

In the current global situation access to information via the internet is vital. Table 18 gives the number of computers connected to the internet. Out of the 609 PCs reported above, 575 were connected to the internet in 2007/08 as shown below. The data here needs updating as more computers are available online.

3HUMAN RESOURCES
The number of staff members presented under this section included those of MUCHS and UCLAS (which are now Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences - MUHAS and Ardhi University - ARU, respectively) for the first four years. However, the number of staff members for the academic year 2007/08 is only for the Main Campus, MUCE and DUCE.Therefore, any implications derived from such numbers should take these changes into account.
3.1OVERALL UDSM STAFF
The UDSM staff categories include academic staff, administrative staff and technical staff (Table 19). In the academic year 2007/08, the University of Dar es Salaam as a whole had 1127 academic staff, 1023 administrative staff and 443 technical staff and hence a total of 2593 staff members.Of these 822 are female staff members accounting for 31.7% of the total workforce.
Table 19: The overall number of UDSM staff members
