Message from the Directors

Welcome to the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam.

Established in January 2013 through cooperation between the University of Dar es Salaam and Zhejiang Normal University, the Institute has grown into an important platform for Chinese language education, academic exchange, and cultural engagement between Tanzania and China.

Our mission is to provide high quality Chinese language education, promote mutual understanding, and strengthen educational and people to people connections between our two countries. Over the years, the Institute has offered Chinese language courses at different levels, supported degree programmes, administered Chinese language proficiency examinations, and organised a wide range of academic and cultural activities. It also serves as a bridge between Tanzanians learning Chinese and Chinese people seeking to understand Kiswahili, Tanzanian society, and African cultures.

As we look to the future, we are committed to strengthening the quality of teaching, supporting the professional development of local Chinese language teachers, expanding opportunities for research and academic cooperation, and responding more effectively to the educational and professional needs of our students and communities. We will also continue to explore innovative and digital approaches to language education and deepen cooperation with schools, universities, educational institutions, and other partners.

Guided by the University of Dar es Salaam’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and public service, we aspire to develop the Institute into a leading centre for Chinese language education, research, assessment, and China–Tanzania educational cooperation.

We warmly welcome students, teachers, researchers, partners, and friends from all backgrounds to learn with us, work with us, and contribute to our shared mission. Together, we can build stronger connections, create new opportunities, and advance mutual understanding between the peoples of Tanzania and China.
