University of Dar es Salaam Student won First Prize at "DARE 2 CHANGE" Social Innovation Competition - 14th September 2018


University of Dar es Salaam student has become the winner in the  Social Innovation Presentations Competition conducted at the Bank of Tanzania venue on 14th september 2018. This was done after the training came to the end on 14th September 2018 whereby 10 students with business ideas pitched in front of 4 judges and 100 invited Guests in the Bank of Tanzania Venue. The invited guests to the Social Innovation Competition came from Government sectors, Private sectors as well as Representatives from different embassies in Dar es Salaam.


The Business ideas found to have impact to the society and community at large were awarded a seed capital for their ventures. This event was officiated by Mrs. Bengi Mizana Issa who is the Executive Secretary of the National Economic Empowerment Council in the presence of the Deputy Vice Chancellor- Research Prof. Cuthbert Z. M. Kimambo, who represented the Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar Es Salaam.


The University of Dar es Salaam Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre (UDIEC) in collaboration with Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) established an annual programme to train young innovators on social innovation and entrepreneurship. The programme brings together graduates from various universities in the country and equips them with social innovation staff as well as entrepreneurship skills and competences that may lead the graduates into developing viable business startup proposals.


Indeed the whole programme is geared towards stimulating the youth to be innovative and think out of the box on possibilities for creating jobs for themselves and for others as well. Already, some quite interesting ideas are evolving from the participating youths that intend to bring changes to the economic and industrious country.


This Year a six weeks training was launched on the 30th of July 2018 in the Rottary Entrepreneurship venue allocated in the Dr. Wilbard Chagula Main Library where 37 Students managed to participate fully until the end of the programme. 


The First Winner was Mr. Kuchengo Suleiman (who was awarded Tzs 6,839,800 as seed Capital) with the project known as ”SUKU CHAI’’, a herbal tea made of mixtures of both ginger and lemon grasses aiming at promoting organic food consumption; the Second Winners were Mr. Faraji Bofu and Juma Matata with the project name “ MABO RECYCLERS SOCIAL ENTERPRISE” which deals with the Recycling papers and manufacturing exercise books that can be sold at a cheaper price. Awarded Tzs. 5,559,900 as seed capital.


Third winner, Betty Sonda with the project named “LILY PADS”, a Biodegradable pads which aims at producing low cost sanitary pads that can be used by women and girls, especially low income families in rural areas, who was awarded Tzs 2,279,500 as seed capital.


The University of Dar es Salaam is geared to equip students and stakeholders with Innovative, Entrepreneurial and Industrial skills that match with the current agenda of her people reaching a middle income by 2025 by the Government.
