philosophy -M.A Ethics of Governance proramme objectives

Graduates of the Master of Arts in Ethics of Governance and Public Service Programme will

  1. Have a through knowledge of central  ethical issues of governance and public service;
  2. Have an understanding of the main methods of ethical research;
  3. Understanding the differences and similarities between ethical and legal issues;
  4. Have developed skills of clear, critical thinking within the framework of both an adequate ethical methodology and accepted norms of scholarship;
  5. Have acquired the skills of analyzing complex ethical issues and suggest resolutions to them
  6. Be able to apply ethical methods to ethical problems in their professional life and in everyday life;
  7. Have the competence to apply research skills that make use of ethical methods.
  8. Be able to ascertain ethical and legal aspects of practical problems they face in their profession lives.

 

The Master of Arts in Ethics of Governance and Public Service is an ethics based multidisciplinary programme (philosophy and ethics, law, development studies, political science). The programme provides the students with advanced knowledge and relevant competencies and skills to meet the current challenges of governance and ethical practice in various fields. The economic, social and political benefits of good governance, integrity and accountability are relevant to many professional institutions and organizations. Thus, this post-graduate programme is relevant to anyone working or planning a career in local, regional, or central government, as well as to those who are involved in civil society, public private partnership or employed by international organizations.

 

The programme has its foundations in applied ethics, but also includes expertise from  other relevant disciplines. The multidisciplinary nature of the programme, guarantees that after graduating, the student have profound understanding of relevant theoretical and legal framework and practical policy issues. The programme provides students with basic skills of critical and systematic analysis. They will be able to look for innovative solutions of existing practical problems in their future careers. As students will be learning not only about the ethical theories but also the methods of applied ethics and empirical research, they will be equipped to deal consistently with the complexity of current ay political and ethical dilemmas.

 

The Master of Arts in Ethics of Governance and Public Service combines normative and empirical approaches with regal and institutional frameworks, public policy, administration, ethical practice, regulation, and leadership capacity. The course teaches the students critical analytical skills for ethical analysis and judgement and their practical application.

 

Master of Art in Ethics of Governance and Public Service, provides future civil servants, leaders in different fields and other professionals with the foundations for ethics, deeper understanding of the challenges of governance, and expertise in the accountability mechanisms and processes in Tanzania. The programme is also within the UDSM Vision 2061, emphasizing the importance of developing new post-graduate programmes.

 

In summary, future professionals (and also those who are already holding different offices) need to learn foundations of ethics in governance to guide the Tanzania development towards democracy, social justice, and empowerment of the people. The programme gives the UDSM a leading intellectual position as an academic institution in Tanzania to introduce a degree  that focuses on the very important and current challenges of ethics in governance and public service.
