The Department of Mathematics of the University of Dar es Salaam was established in July 1965. It was housed on the second floor of Physics Department building until 1971 when it was moved to its current building. The Department of Mathematics started with only 3 teaching members of staff who were all foreigners. The first intake of undergraduate students was in 1966 involved only 14 students. The first Tanzania academic member of staff, Mr. Laizer joined the department in 1967. He left the department after a year, early in 1968. Since then, the department has continuously expanded in terms of staff and student numbers.
