Mathematics for Sustainable Development Project Wins the NORHED II Funding: 2021 - 2026

The government of Norway issued a call for proposals under the NORHED II (2021-2026). A Research Team comprising of some members from University of Dar Es Salaam, University of Bergen and Makerere University prepared and submitted a proposal to NORAD in June 2020. On 18 December 2020, we received the good news that our proposal was among the 60 proposals that were selected for funding by the Norwegian government.

 The Title of  the Project: Mathematics for Sustainable Development

Expected total funding: 19,996,239 NOK.

Duration of Project: Six (6) years

The project will involve the specialties in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics Education and Mathematics applied to Biomedical/Health Sciences.

 

The Partner Institutions in the said NORHED II Project are:

  • Mathematics Departments at University of Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania), University of Bergen (Norway) and Makerere University, (Uganda).
  • School of Education at University of Dar Es Salaam,  Mathematics Education at the Department of Mathematics, University of Bergen and  College of Education and External Studies at Makerere University.
  • Medical units at University of Bergen, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and College of Health Sciences at Makerere University.

 

The Core Research Team involved in Tanzania

  • Sylvester Rugeihyamu, Dr. Egbert Mujuni and Prof. Allen Mushi from Mathematics Department, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Dar Es Salaam
  • Dr. Septimi Kitta , Department of Educational Psychology and Curriculum Studies in the School of education, University of Dar es salaam
  • Dr. Kasubi Mabula, Muhimbili University College of Health and Allied Sciences.

Planned Activities of the Project at University of Dar Es Salaam

  1. Support the training of four (4) PhD students in Applied Mathematics who must do research in the areas of or related to Data Science, Computational Mathematics or Mathematics applied to Health.
  2. Support training of two (2) PhD students in Mathematics Education.
  3. Support the review of the current PhD curriculumwith a taught component. The said review is mandatory in order to address the project areas of focus.
  4. Support the teaching of some targeted PhD courses in Applied Mathematics on the reviewed curriculum.
  5. Support teaching on the reviewed PhD curriculum
  6. Joint supervision of the PhD students and visit of students for supervision
  7. Support for conferences and meetings
  8. Support equipment for mathematics computer lab
  9. Support a few outreach activities related to the teaching of Mathematics in Secondary Schools in Tanzania

 

Planned Activities at Makerere University

The project is for a period of six (6) years (2021-2026) and is expected to start in early 2021.
