Prof. John Andrew Marco Mahugija (PhD) is an Associate Professor in Chemistry Department, University of Dar es Salaam. He holds PhD (Chemistry) specializing in Analytical and Environmental Chemistry obtained from the University of Dar es Salaam & German Research Centre for Environmental Health, Munich-Germany. He also holds MSc (Chemistry) specializing in Analytical and Environmental Chemistry obtained from the University of Dar es Salaam & GSF-National Research Centre for Environment and Health, Munich-Germany, and BSc (Ed) (First Class Honours) majoring in Biology, Chemistry and Education obtained from the University of Dar es Salaam.

He is a winner of many prizes/awards including University Prize-best final year student in the Faculty of Science, University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in 2000-2001; Thermodynamics Prize-best 2nd year student in Thermodynamics in 1998-1999; Chemistry Prize-best 2nd year student in Chemistry in 1998/1999; Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) Prize-best final year student in the Faculty of Science in 2000/2001; Double Cola Cash Prize-best final year student in the Faculty of Science in 2000–2001; Coca Cola Kwanza Prize-overall best final year student in B.Sc. (Ed) in 2001; Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education Prize-overall best student in the Faculty of Science, University of Dar es Salaam 1997–2001; First Winner Award for the best outreach project of the year, University of Dar es Salaam 2021/2022; 2nd best winner in publications in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences in 2018/2019; and co-winner in the best public service delivery/consultancy in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences in 2018/2019.

He was employed by the University of Dar es Salaam as Assistant Lecturer in July 2005 and was promoted to Lecturer in July 2009, Senior Lecturer in July 2015 and Associate Professor in 2019. He previously worked as a Biology and Chemistry Teacher at 3 secondary schools (1994-1997 & 2002-2005), and Education Officer–Environmental Education, Ministry of Education and Culture Head Quarters, Dar es Salaam (27th December 2004–30th March 2005). He has worked as a Part-time Lecturer at Mkwawa University College of Education (2006-2013); Dar es Salaam University College of Education (2010-2012); St. Joseph College of Engineering-Dar es Salaam (2010-2011); Ardhi University (2012-2014); and University of Bagamoyo (2014–2015).

He is the Chief Editor of the Tanzania Journal of Science & Chairperson of the Publications Committee & Member of Research, Innovation, Publications and Knowledge Exchange (RIPKE) Committee of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences from 2018 to date. His research interests include analyses of organic and inorganic chemicals such as pesticides, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), aldehydes, heavy metals, drugs of abuse, and  proteins in samples of environmental matrices (i.e., water, soil, sediments, biota and air), food substances, industrial products, human beings and others. He also works on development and applications of analytical methods for organic and inorganic compounds and study the environmental chemodynamics and effects of xenobiotic compounds. He has supervised a number of MSc and PhD theses/dissertations and published many articles/papers in local and international journals as well as conferences/symposia proceedings. He actively organizes and participates in conferences, workshops, symposia and training courses. He undertakes many special duties, consultancy and public services including being Guest of honour at various events.

He has visited many countries, including Austria, Bangladesh, Benin, Egypt, Ethiopia, Germany, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, The Netherlands, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sweden, Scotland-United Kingdom (UK), Uganda, United Arab Emirates, and Zambia.
