On Friday 18th November 2022, DUCE under the initiative of the Centre for Social and Political Research (CSPR) conducted a one-day public dialogue on climate change whose theme was “On Saving Lives and Livelihood Opportunities in Climate-Vulnerable Coastal Communities of the Indian Ocean Region”.

In his remarks, the Chairperson of the organizing team, Dr. Almas Mazigo informed that the public dialogue was held to engage ordinary citizens, policy actors, activists, government officials, political leaders, journalists, researchers and educators in critical reflections about the threats of climate change to coastal communities of the Indian Ocean region. He also said the dialogue will explore how community-university engagement initiatives can contribute to climate actions which save lives and livelihood opportunities in climate-vulnerable coastal communities.

In his opening speech, the College Principal, Prof Stephen Maluka applauded CSPR for organizing the public dialogue and urged participants to use the opportunity to debate and deliberate on the most effective strategic actions to deal with the threats of climate change. Furthermore, Prof. Maluka stated that DUCE Management will continue to support collaborative efforts and engagements with various stakeholders in finding solutions to challenges facing society. He thanked the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and Climate-U Project for funding the event.
