UDIEC collaborated with Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Research Organization (STIPRO) and Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) to organize and host the 4th AfricaLICS International Conference. The event was held at UDSM New library Auditorium from 22nd to 24th October 2019. The African Network for Research Training on Innovation and Competence Building Systems (AfricaLics) is a network of scholars in Africa and beyond who are interested in innovation and development focused on Africa’s development.

The major theme of the conference was “Innovation and transformative Capacities for Growth and Sustainable Development in Africa”. The theme has been coined in response to a cross-road that African countries are seemingly in, in terms of directionality of their innovation policies in an attempt to attain sustainable development, while as a result of worsening environmental challenges, academic and policy discourses seem to be taking a new turn in the history of innovation, a turn away from emphasis on innovation for increased productivity and growth issues. The African continent is at the height of its growth debate, where innovation is central. Thus, to provide platform for more dialogue in this aspect the AfricaLICS 2019 Pre - conference Roundtable on the Nexus between Growth and Industrialization Agenda and Environmental Concern: What Policy Options? Was organized and took place on 17th October 2019. This was held at COSTECH. Forty-six people participated out of which 10 were University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) staff.
