On December 9th , CI UDSM successfully held The Welcome Ceremony For Students of CI UDSM 2019. Prof. Aldin Mutembei and Prof. Liu Yan, the Tanzanian and Chinese Director of CI UDSM, Mr. Li Zuobin, the sponsor of the “Wanlong Scholarship”, General Manager of Sino-Africa Wanlong Commercial Trade Co. Ltd, all the faculty members and students attended the Welcome Ceremony.

The opening ceremony began. The host, Imani A. Haji, welcomed the guests and students. Professor Mutembei, Tanzania Director of Confucius Institute, made a speech. He introduced the summer camp, the scholarship and other programs that are offered at the institute and encouraged students to persue their dreams through hard work. Moreover, he said that there is a great need for Chinese teachers in primary and secondary schools in Tanzania and hoped that after graduation, they would fill these positions.

Dr. Liu Yan, the Chinese Director of Confucius Institute, welcomed the freshmen to join the family and placed high hopes on the students. He hoped that the students would follow the example of the local teachers in Confucius Institute, work hard and pass the HSK test. Get the opportunity to go to China to study, and become a Chinese teacher to teach Tanzanian or Swahili teacher to teach Chinese, to win a better future for themselves, and to contribute to the friendship between China and Tanzania.

Mr. Li Zuobin, the sponsor of Wanlong Scholarship, awarded scholarships to the winning students. In his speech, Mr. Li Zuobin congratulated the students who won the award He hoped to provide some help for outstanding Chinese learners through the establishment of scholarship, and encourage more students to learn Chinese well.

Then Hadija Chaurembo, a local teacher, spoke as a teacher representative. She introduced her own process from learning Chinese to becoming a Chinese teacher. She encouraged students to learn Chinese, even if they encounter difficulties, and only through unremitting efforts can they realize their dreams.

Students Mshana Gloria G. and Eva Paul spoke as excellent student representatives and freshmen representatives, respectively. Mshana Gloria G. expressed her gratitude to the Confucius Institute and the scholarship sponsors in fluent Chinese. She shared her method of learning Chinese. Eva Paul is full of expectation for college life.

Since the establishment of Chinese major in undergraduate and junior college in 2018, the number of registered students has been growing. CI UDSM will further strengthen the professional construction of Chinese language, continue to improve the quality of teaching, improve student literacy, cultivate more high-level Chinese talents for Tanzania, and make greater contributions to the exchanges and cooperation between China and Tanzania.
