The University of Dar es Salaam Sports Tutor, Noel Kiunsi has been nominated among the swimming technical officials to preside over the 8th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships to be held in Lima, Peru from 30th August to 4th September, 2022.

Mr. Kiunsi is among the 26 international swimming technical officials nominated from five continents namely Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Since June 2021, FINA comprises 209 National Member Federations in the five continents.

The nomination that was communicated to the University of Dar es Salaam, in a letter from the FINA Executive Director Brent J. Nowicki, indicates that the nomination of these officials has been based on their relevant expertise, vast experience and accreditation.

“We have the pleasure to send to you (University of Dar es Salaam) the information related to your Swimming International Technical Official [Mr. Noel Kiunsi] at the 8th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Lima”, stated Nowicki.

Mr. Kiunsi, who is one of the only three officials selected from Africa – with other two from the countries of Angola and Morroco, is a principal sports tutor and coordinator of University sports and games, at the Directorate of Social Services (DSS) of the University of Dar es Salaam and has a great experience in training sports, especially swimming, locally and internationally.

“I am very glad to secure this international opportunity. It is indeed a great honour for me to represent my country and the sports sector in Tanzania in these prestigious World Swimming competitions as a technical official, and among the judges”, said Mr. Kiunsi.

Kiunsi, who also officiated the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships held in Dubai in 2010 says he will “perform diligently and excellently” the roles bestowed to him.

The FINA World Junior Swimming Championships were first held in 2006 in Rio de Janeiro (BRA). Subsequent editions of the biennial event followed in Monterrey (MEX) in 2008; Lima (PER) in 2011; Dubai (UAE) in 2013; Singapore (SGP) in 2015; Indianapolis (USA) in 2017; and Budapest (HUN) in 2019.

FINA and its aquatic disciplines are also a pillar of the Olympic Games and Movement and give a decisive contribution to the success of such games. Swimming is part of the Olympic programme since 1896, Water Polo became the first team sport in the Games in 1900, and Diving made its appearance in 1904.
