Dr. Saumu Jumanne is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Economics, DUCE. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), a Master of Arts in Geography and Environmental Management (MA.GEM), and a Bachelor of Science with Education majoring in Biology and Geography, all obtained from the same University. As an academician, her core roles are teaching, research, and consultancy. Dr. Saumu has over a decade of experience teaching various Geography courses, including Biogeography, Physical Geography, Soil Resources, Contemporary Geography of Africa, and Research Methods in Geography. Likewise, she teaches Pest Infestation, Control, and Management, a BA. Disaster Risk Management Degree Programme course, which commenced in the 2021/2022 Academic Year. Dr. Saumu is an accomplished researcher interested in several areas of geography including Agricultural Geography in relation to innovations (new crop varieties, and post-harvest storage methods), agricultural change, climate change, and land use/cover changes. Other areas of interest include biodiversity, migration, rural development, environmental/natural resource management, as well as population and development.Dr. Saumu uses her extra time mentoring young people (both boys and girls), reading books, and sharing knowledge. As a committed academic and a passionate advocate for sharing knowledge and expertise with the broader community, she has written a regular column called CROSSROADS for the Citizen on Sunday Newspaper for over a decade. She uses the platform to disseminate knowledge and engage with a diverse audience. Through her column, Dr. Saumu has provided readers with valuable insights and perspectives on various issues related to geography, agriculture, climate change, women empowerment, children and women rights, environmental or natural resource management, and development related issues as a whole. Her dedication to sharing knowledge and expertise beyond academia reflects her commitment to public service and positively impacting society.
