Biography

Agnes E.G. Mwakaje is an academic staff and researcher at the Institute of Resource Assessment, University of Dar es Salaam since 2000. Professor Mwakaje holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from London University since 1999. She has a wide research experience and practices in agriculture, climate change, environmental impact assessments, natural resource management and rural development and; she has published widely in the aforementioned fields. Prof Mwakaje also teaches postgraduate students and has supervised a large number of students at masters and Ph.D. levels. Before joining the university of Dar es Salaam, Agnes worked with the Ministry of Agriculture (Department of Policy, Planning and Marketing) for 9 years and Cooperative and Rural Development Bank as Credit Supervisor for 2 years. She has also worked with the Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology (MJNUAT) for 6 years (2018-2024). Administratively, Prof Mwakaje has served at various capacities as follows: Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic, Research and Consultancy) MJNUAT, 2023-2024, Dean ICT and Business Studies 2019-2023 MJNUAT; Director Postgraduate Studies (UDSM) 2015-2028; Director Institute of Resource Assessment 2018; Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies 2011-2014 and Manager University of Dar es Salaam Consultancy Bureau (2004-2007). Professor Mwakaje is also a member of various professional, non-professional associations and boards such as Tanzania Environmental Experts, Tanzania Association of Agricultural Economists, Environmental Working Group, Board Member at the School of Science and Technology, Ardhi University, Board Member at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Fisheries Technology, University of Dar es Salaam. Chairperson of the Tender Board, Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology. Professor Mwakaje’s research interests include sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, natural resource management, climate change, carbon trade, rural development, environmental impact assessment, applications of AI. Prof Mwqkaje has coordinated a number of big projects such as SIDA Food Security Project worth about USD 2M, Valor Project, worth USD280,000, EIA for Mchuchuma Liganga Project USD 270,000. She enjoys working in teams and she is a team builder.
