Introduction

The Population Studies and Research Centre (PSRC) is a newly established centre within the University of Dar es Salaam, a public institution of the United Republic of Tanzania. The Centre was formed through the transformation of the former Demographic Training Unit (DTU), which operated for over 40 years. Established in 1984/1985 through collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, the DTU played a key role in postgraduate training, research support, publications, and capacity building in population studies.

Over the years, the Centre has produced approximately 150 Master’s graduates and 25 PhD holders. However, this output has not fully matched the growing national and global demand for population experts. Limited engagement in national policy dialogues, weak professional networking, and insufficient dissemination of research findings have constrained the broader impact of these experts. At the same time, there remains a significant need for skilled professionals in population studies across local government authorities, national institutions, the private sector, and higher learning institutions.

Initially, the DTU focused on building capacity in demographic data collection, processing, analysis, and interpretation, linking population dynamics to socio-economic development. While this foundation remains important, there has been limited emphasis on emerging and complex issues such as international migration, population ageing, and changing demographic structures, and their implications for development. Additionally, coordination challenges arising from reliance on multidisciplinary staff across departments have affected operational efficiency.

The transformation into PSRC represents a strategic shift toward addressing these gaps. The Centre aims to become a hub of excellence in population studies by strengthening training, enhancing research relevance, promoting knowledge dissemination, and building strong professional networks. Through this transformation, PSRC is committed to producing competent and impactful population experts who will contribute effectively to national development, as well as to regional and global advancement in population studies.
