Biography

Dr. Alfred John Msasu holds a Master of Science in Health Informatics and a Bachelor of Medicine from the University of Dar es Salaam. Additionally, he holds a Diploma in Health System Management from the Galilee International Management Institute in Israel.

Dr. Msasu currently serves as the Medical Officer In-charge at the UDSM Hospital and as the UDSM HIV/AIDS and Non-Communicable Diseases Coordinator. Since 2021, he has also been appointed as the focal person for the University of Dar es Salaam in the implementation of Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future (O3 Plus) Project, a Regional initiative led by UNESCO. This project aims to promote the health and well-being of students in Higher and Tertiary Education Institutions across Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries.

Assessment of Health Care Waste Management (HCWM) and Mercury Practices in the Health Care Sector

DESCRIPTION:

Led a comprehensive assessment of health care waste management (HCWM) systems and mercury-related practices across public and private health facilities in Dar es Salaam. The assignment involved evaluating current HCWM infrastructure, identifying gaps in mercury handling and disposal, and providing recommendations to align with National and International Environmental and Health Standards, including the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

Challenges of Using Health Information for Action in Managing District Health Systems and Programs – A Case of Eastern Tanzania

Description: Investigated the barriers to effective use of health information in decision-making and program management at the district level.

Projects

1. Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future (O3 Plus) Project
The O3 Plus project aims to ensure that young people in higher and tertiary education institutions across the Southern African Development Community (SADC), particularly in Tanzania, achieve positive outcomes in health, education, and gender equality. It focuses on reducing new HIV infections, unintended pregnancies, and gender-based violence. Through these efforts, the project empowers learners to reach their full educational potential and to contribute meaningfully as graduates, professionals, and young leaders to national and regional development.
