Bryan Josephat Rugangira is my name. At the University of Dar es Salaam, I work as an assistant lecturer in the Creative Arts Department where I convey my knowledge of fine art and offer my skills. I am a visual artist who specializes in drawing, painting, and graphic design in addition to being an art educator. As a fine artist I am inspired by realism in art, I like to capture each and every detail that I see in the real world and depict it in my works of art. I mostly use ball point pen on papers and acrylic paints on canvas or hard papers. I also use graphite pencils occasionally. The most common subjects in my artworks are human portraits, wild animals and other related subjects. I simply like to inspire other people through my works of art.
During a practical training exercise in my second year of college in 2011, I worked with some graphic designers at a certain non-governmental organization named TAYOA (Tanzania Youth Association) where I developed my graphic design skills throughout that time, I expanded my knowledge and skills in the arts during my time in college. Even though I wasn't especially interested in teaching art as an undergrad, I started working as an art and design teacher in a particular secondary school named Jaffery High School from 2013 to 2015. I had significant professional growth as a teacher throughout my two years of employment there. Additionally, I spent a year working as a graphic designer for a specific company called Ally Rich Sanaa (Arts) LTD from 2017 to 2018 before returning to the University of Dar es Salaam to pursue my master’s degree. A year later while still doing my master’s degree, I applied for a part-time job as a studio instructor at the same University in 2019.
My master's program required us to complete a large painting that was 4 feet by 8 feet in size as part of our homework during the second semester. My finished picture was shown in a number of art exhibitions. It was on display during the Africa Heads of State Human Capital Summit, which took place in Dar es Salaam on July 25 and 26, 2023. I also participated in a few art exhibitions such as the East Africa Art Biennale at Nafasi Art Space, Dar es salaam in 2019. The 6th UDSM Research and Innovation Week, at the Department of Creative Arts, University of Dar es salaam in 2021. And Bi Mdashi Exhibition Beyond herself at Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center, Masaki, Dar es salaam in 2022.
I attended Meru Primary School from 1996 to 2002 for my basic education, then Jaffery High School where I completed O-level secondary schooling in 2006. From 2007 to February 2009, I attended Breakthrough High School for my A-level secondary studies. I began my undergraduate studies at the University of Dar es Salaam in October 2009, and I received my Bachelor of Fine and Performing Arts degree from there in 2012. I continued my postgraduate studies there in 2018 and received my master's in fine art there in 2022.
Both of my parents supported my art journey since I was a child. My mother told me years later that I had actually started drawing at the age of three, but I had always thought I started drawing when I was five. We didn't have a fine arts subject at our school in 2006 when I was a regular secondary student. I had to be registered to take a national exam in fine art, which my mother had to request from the school administration. I was the only student in our school to take the fine arts exam. When the results were announced, I performed well in that topic when compared to other subjects. Because of my impressive achievement, the school management decided to establish a fine art course after I finished.
My hobbies include watching movies, networking and I've recently developed a passion for learning how to create 2d animations.
