Godwin Mruma Gadiel

College of Information and Communication Technologies

Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering

Biography

Godwin Mruma Gadiel is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, in the College of Information and Communication Technologies since 13th September 2024. His academic carrier at the University of Dar es Salaam, Started on 7th August 2009, serving as a Tutorial Assistant. He later on promoted to the rank of Assistant lecturer on 16th November 2013, after successfully completed Masters of Science in Electronics Engineering and Information Technology at University of Dar es Salaam. Whereas, his research focus was on Blind Algorithms Development for Peak to Average Power Ratio Reduction in OFDM Systems Under Frequency Selective Fading Channels. In 2025, he was among the beneficiary of the Global Korean Scholarship (GKS) also known as Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP), where he undertook one-year Korean language program at Chonnam National University and succeeded to achieve Korean language proficiency certificate at level 3. Later on, he joined Seol National University of Science and Technology (SEOLTECH) for PhD training on Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, which he completed on 22nd February 2020. Particularly, his research topic was Energy-Efficient hybrid Beamforming Algorithms for massive multiple-input multiple output(MIMO) Systems. Since the, he has been involved in doing research and he has managed to published a number of papers and achieved the current academic rank.

Furthermore, Dr Gadiel has been engaged in application of Technology in Wildlife Conservation research. Specifically, Specifically, a team led by Dr. Gadiel as a principle investigator developed animal tracking system as a solution to combat pouching problem in many of Tanzania's wildlife conservation areas and National parks. The developed solution is inspired by energy efficiency characteristic of LoRA technology and its ability to send data in a long range, thus making it possible for having few routing stations while monitoring many tagged animals. Additionally, he was also involved in Cost-Free Campus Network, which aimed at providing connectivity to campus students by using TV-white space technology as team member. The network was successfully implemented at UDSM main campus, school of Journalism Campus and College of Information and Communication Technologies.

Dr Gadiel has held several coordination and management post at different capacities in the College. He was Undergraduate coordinator at ETE department from July 2021 to March 2025. Currently, he is acting Head of department from March 2025 to date and a coordinator at challenge driven education (CDE) hub from June 2024 to date. His research interest is focused on wireless communication. Specifically, research on physical layer where signal processing techniques are applied to enhance the performance of wireless network in performance parameters such as system sum-rate, energy efficiency, Bit error rate etc. Application of emerging technologies to enhance the performance of wireless communication is one of the key areas of interest in his research basket. For example, the application of artificial intelligence(AI) in enhancing the performance parameters in the physical layer part of his research interest. Currently, he is working on developing algorithm to enhance the performance of key technological feature of 6G network, that is IRS aided wireless communication. Another feature which is of interest in 6G network is the deployment of extra large multiple-input multiple output (XL - MIMO), which promises several gigabits per second data rate. His desire is to see a next generation wireless communication, which will provide adequate data rate based on the application at hand, urban and rural demands inclusivity and energy efficiency wireless technologies that are environmental friendly.

Research Interest

His research interest is focused on physical layer improvement for emerging wireless technologies through application of signal processing techniques. His work is focused on improving key performance parameters such as bit-error rate(BER), system sum rate and energy efficiency. Currently he is working of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) - aided wireless communication and extra large MIMO(XL - MIMO). He is also engaged in the use of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the performance of wireless network.
