Samwel Gerald Mbawala is an Assistant Lecturer in Law at the University of Dar es Salaam, he teaches human rights law, private international law, international trade and finance law, social security law and immigration law amongst others . He holds an LL.B (Hons) and an LL.M in Migration and Refugee Law from the University of Dar es Salaam, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law School of Tanzania.
Beyond academia, Samwel is an accomplished human rights lawyer and consultant with over a decade of experience in advocacy, training, and policy research. He has worked extensively with UN agencies, INGOs, and civil society organizations in Tanzania and Zanzibar, focusing on the rights of marginalized groups, digital rights, and governance

Human Rights Usawa Project Evaluation (2024)
Conducted an independent evaluation of the EU-funded Usawa Project implemented by Protection International Africa. The work assessed the effectiveness of interventions aimed at strengthening human rights defenders and provided recommendations for future programming.
Digital Rights in Tanzania Research (2023)
Engaged as Researcher with the Centre for Strategic Litigation and LONDA, examining the legal and policy framework around digital rights in Tanzania. The findings contributed to national and regional advocacy on online freedoms and data protection.
Legal and Policy Analysis on Child Protection in the Tobacco Sector (2020)
Undertook research for the International Labour Organization (ILO) to analyze child protection mechanisms within Tanzania’s tobacco industry. The report informed advocacy on labor rights and child protection policy reforms.
