Institute of Marine Sciences

Biography

Mr. Juma Twaha Juma is an Assistant Lecturer at the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS), University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He holds a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of Dodoma (2021–2024), where he conducted research on the Fabrication of Refractory Bricks Using Mine Waste and Local Resources. He also earned a Bachelor of Science with Education (Chemistry major) from St. John’s University of Tanzania (2018–2021), completing an undergraduate research project on the Fabrication of Zinc-Oxide Magnetite as an Antimicrobial Agent towards Salmonella Typhi.

Mr. Juma’s research and professional experience span materials chemistry, environmental and industrial applications, and sustainable construction materials. He has worked as a Research Assistant under the COSTECH-funded Cement Innovation Project, focusing on developing sustainable cement formulations from locally available materials. He has also contributed to materials science projects involving the fabrication and characterization of refractory ceramics from mine waste.

His research interests include sustainable cement chemistry for zero-emission construction materials, advanced ceramics and refractory materials, functional nanomaterials for energy and antimicrobial applications, and materials characterization for performance optimization. He is particularly passionate about transforming industrial and mine waste into high-value materials that support sustainable development.

Mr. Juma is proficient in a range of analytical and characterization techniques, including XRD, SEM, FTIR, ICP-OES, and thermal analysis (TGA/DSC), and has experience in laboratory standards development, sample analysis, and technical reporting. He has also participated in academic seminars and workshops on proposal writing, citation, and scientific reporting.

Beyond academia, he has contributed to community education through voluntary teaching and fieldwork in secondary schools across Tanzania. Mr. Juma’s career goal is to advance research and innovation in sustainable materials and marine-related applications that promote environmental conservation and industrial resilience.
