Biography

Twaariq Mohamed Yahya is a marine and coastal tourism professional and academic whose work focuses on marine and coastal tourism development, the blue economy, sustainability transitions, and inclusive coastal livelihoods. His academic interests center on understanding how marine tourism value chains interact with conservation objectives, governance frameworks, and youth employment to shape equitable economic outcomes in coastal and island destinations.

He currently serves as a Tutorial Assistant at the Institute of Marine Sciences, University of Dar es Salaam, where he teaches Marine and Coastal Eco-Tourism. His teaching and research are informed by extensive professional experience in Tanzania’s tourism sector, including roles with Zara Tours, Shah Tours & Travel, and Singita Grumeti Reserves. This industry background allows him to connect academic inquiry with operational and policy-relevant realities.

Mr. Yahya is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism at the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (Taiwan), with a focus on sustainable tourism policy, destination planning, and investment-ready marine tourism models. His long-term academic goal is to undertake PhD and contribute to evidence-based policy and strategic decision-making in marine tourism and coastal development, particularly in East Africa and island economies.

Research Interest

My research interests lie in marine and coastal tourism development, with particular emphasis on the blue economy, sustainability transitions, and coastal livelihoods. I am especially interested in how marine tourism value chains interact with conservation objectives, youth employment, and inclusive economic growth in coastal and island destinations.
