Biography

Dr Devota John Marwa is a Lecturer in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, School of Education at the University of Dar es Salaam. She holds a PhD from the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, where he graduated in 2015. She pursued her Master’s programme at the University of Dar es Salaam, where she obtained a Master of Arts in Education (MA Ed) in 2003 and a Bachelor of Education (Honours) degree in 1999. Devota has been teaching in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences in the School of Education at the University of Dar es Salaam since December, 2004. Her areas of interest are curriculum and teaching, gender and sport, and the Administration and Management of Sports. Devota has also served in managerial capacities in various educational institutions and sports organisations. Furthermore, Devota has experience in working as a teacher, curriculum developer, workshop participant and facilitator, conference organizer and presenter. I also involved in books and papers reviews, authorship, researcher and project evaluation.

5. Involved in education activities in Tanzania in many ways, such as:

  • Design and planning physical education and sport curricula (pre-primary, primary, secondary and teacher education levels and netball curriculum for VETA and ordinary secondary education vocational stream);
  • Writing of physical education and sport syllabuses, students’ textbooks, teacher’s guides, training manuals and netball syllabus and students’ textbooks for VETA and ordinary secondary education vocational stream;
  • Participated in education evaluation and needs assessment research to guide the curriculum review and changes, and reviewed VETA’s training guides and TLEs.
  • Training and dissemination of reviewed and newly introduced curriculum materials to education implementors such es teacher education tutors, sports and games tutors and physical education teachers.
  • Participated in setting, moderating and invigilating / external examiner for physical education and sports for secondary, teacher education (under NECTA and Malya College of Sports Development)
  • IUCEA workshops on benchmarking sport education curriculum for higher learning education in East Africa, in 2020. 
  • Visited Finland for fact findings to align with the development of Master of education in Physical Education programme by course work for School of Education in the University of Dar es salaam in collaboration with Jyväskylä University conducted in Jyväskylä, Finland (in 2015).

    6. Participated in sports in many ways:

  • As an athlete, trainer, teacher, organizer, coordinator, supervisor, official and advisor of physical education and sport activities;
  • Formulation of the University of Dar es salaam sport policy and strategic plan, national stakeholders meeting for review of the national sports development policy and reviewed Africa netball constitution;
  • Participated in national and international women sports forum and decision making platforms,
  • Organized and coordinated national, Muungano and East Africa netball club championship competitions.

    7. Involved in public outreach activities such as:

  • One of the founders of the Tanzania women's football team (2011)
  • Evaluator of sport development aid/Liike projects- Finland NGO based in Tanzania (Mother and Daughters in Sports in Mtwara, Empowered Girls Speak Out in Mtwara and Empowered Boys Speak Out in Lindi- 2014, 2017 & 2022)
  • Advisor of Lugalo Golf Club 2015-2017
  • Advisor of Macmillan Aidan Publisher (for primary and secondary education text books2000-2005)
