Biography

ADIMU SAIDI NIHUKA a Deaf Library Officer I at Directorate of Library Services (DLS)  University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).

Adimu Saidi NihuKa is a Deaf Library Officer I at the University of Dar es Salaam Library. He has served in the Directorate of Library Services since 2019. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Studies from Dar es Salaam Tumaini University (DarTU) and a Certificate in Sign Language Interpretation (Specialized Tanzania Sign Language – TSL) from the University of Dar es Salaam.

 

Areas of Specialization
His professional expertise includes:
- Classification and cataloguing of both print and electronic information materials
- Data entry, editing, and cleaning
- Shelving and shelf reading
- Assisting users with information retrieval (both online and offline)
- Supporting users in accessing the Library’s databases and e-resources
- Information literacy training

Focus on Deaf and Disability Services
Adimu plays a vital role in promoting inclusive library services for students and staff with special needs, with particular emphasis on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. He provides specialized support to ensure equitable access to information and library resources. 

 

His responsibilities in this area include:

- Offering Sign Language interpretation and communication support to Deaf students and staff during library orientation, research consultations, information literacy sessions, and general library use.
- Training members of the University community (students, academic and administrative staff) in basic Tanzania Sign Language (TSL) to foster a more inclusive campus environment.
- Collaborating with the UDSM Centre for Disability Services to develop and deliver tailored library programs for persons with disabilities.
- Advocating for and implementing accessible library practices, such as ensuring Deaf-friendly information delivery methods and promoting the acquisition of relevant resources in accessible formats.

 

Through his dedicated work, Mr. Nihuka helps bridge communication barriers and empowers Deaf students to fully utilize the rich academic resources available at the UDSM Library. His dual expertise in librarianship and sign language interpretation makes him a key figure in advancing disability inclusion and accessibility within the University of Dar es Salaam.

He continues to contribute significantly to the mission of the UDSM Library in providing equitable, high-quality information services to the entire university community at large.

Adimu Saidi NihuKa’s unique position as a Deaf Library Officer I with qualifications in Library and Information Studies and specialized Tanzania Sign Language (TSL) makes him exceptionally well-placed to conduct impactful research.
