UDSM and Harvard Explore Strategic AI Partnership to Advance Higher Education and Research

The University of Dar es Salaam has initiated high-level discussions with Harvard University aimed at establishing a strategic partnership on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching, research, and data analytics.
The talks were spearheaded by the Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam, former President Dr.Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, during an official working visit to the United States.
The proposed collaboration seeks to strengthen institutional capacity in the effective use of AI to enhance learning systems, accelerate research productivity, and improve the processing and analysis of large volumes of information—an increasingly critical priority for universities worldwide.
At a time when higher education institutions are navigating both the opportunities and challenges presented by AI technologies, UDSM’s engagement with Harvard reflects a forward-looking strategy to ensure Tanzania remains competitive in the global digital transformation agenda.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Kikwete emphasized the importance of ethical, accountable, and responsible deployment of AI, noting that the technology has significant potential to improve the quality of higher education and research when properly governed.
The Harvard delegation included senior academic leaders and experts, among them Prof. Jeremy M. Weinstein and Dr. Fatema Sumar of the Center for International Development.
Also participating were leading AI specialists from Harvard, including Prof. Sharad Goel, Dr. Dan Levy, and Dr. Teddy Svoronos, all recognized for their expertise in AI applications for public policy and data-driven decision-making.
The discussions are expected to lead to closer institutional collaboration between the two universities, with Harvard expressing readiness to support capacity building at UDSM in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence.
If realized, the partnership could mark a significant milestone for higher education in Tanzania by linking local academic talent with world-class expertise to drive innovation, research excellence, and digital transformation.
