University Community Pays Tribute to a Humble Communicator, Trusted Colleague and Unsung Hero of Institutional Service

The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) community, led by Chancellor and former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, has paid an emotional farewell to Mr. Jackson Isdory Mushi, a respected communications professional whose dedication, humility and unwavering commitment to service left an enduring mark on Tanzania's premier university.

Hundreds of mourners filled Nkrumah Hall on 30 May 2026 to celebrate a life that many described as one of quiet excellence, selfless service and extraordinary professionalism.

Family members, friends, colleagues, alumni, students, government leaders and development partners gathered to honour a man whose work often took place behind the scenes, yet whose impact was visible across nearly every major milestone of the University.

The solemn ceremony was attended by several national leaders, including Minister for Education, Science and Technology Prof. Adolf Mkenda; Minister of State in the President’s Office - Planning and Investment, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo; former Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Tulia Ackson, and the Tanzania High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Amb. Mbelwa Brighton Kairuki.

Others included Prof. Godius Kahyarara, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Transport; Dr. Kedmon Mapana, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the President's Office, Youth Development; UDSM Council Chairperson, Amb. Mwanaidi Sinare Maajar; UDSM Vice Chancellor Prof. William A. L. Anangisye; Prof. Rwekaza Mukandala, former UDSM Vice Chancellor; members of University Management, senior government officials and representatives from various institutions.

During the ceremony, many described the late Mushi as a dedicated professional whose contribution to the University and the nation extended far beyond his official responsibilities.

"Some people serve loudly and visibly. Others serve quietly, yet their contribution becomes woven into the fabric of an institution. Jackson belonged to that second category. His dedication, professionalism and commitment to service earned him the trust and respect of everyone who worked with him”, it was noted.

Born on 21 May 1983, Jackson Isdory Mushi graduated from the University of Dar es Salaam's School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 2007 with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations and Advertising before earning a Master's Degree in Corporate Strategic Communication from Universiti Putra Malaysia.

He joined UDSM on 25 May 2009 as a Public Relations Officer and steadily rose through the ranks to become Principal Public Relations Officer II, a position he held until his untimely passing.

An exceptional communicator

On behalf of the University, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Prof. Nelson Boniface, described Mushi as an exceptional communicator whose career was defined by loyalty, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to institutional service.

"Jackson dedicated his life to advancing the interests of the University. Whether coordinating major events, strengthening stakeholder relations or managing institutional communication, he approached every assignment with diligence, integrity and humility," said Prof. Boniface.

Throughout his 17-year career, Mushi became one of the University's most dependable officers, playing a central role in protocol management, public relations, stakeholder engagement and the organisation of major institutional events. Colleagues recalled that he was often the first person called when a challenge arose and the last person to leave when a task needed to be completed.

The eulogy presented by UDSM Head of Communication and Marketing, Dr. Dotto Paul Kuhenga, on behalf of the University painted the portrait of a man who had become indispensable to the institution's daily operations.

"Do you have an urgent assignment? Call Isdory. Are you stuck somewhere? Call Isdory. Do you need advice? Call Isdory. Do you need to understand protocol? Call Isdory," one tribute recalled, reflecting the confidence and trust colleagues had in his judgment and reliability.

A unifying force within the University community

Former Vice Chancellor Prof. Rwekaza Mukandala described Mushi as a unifying force within the University community whose calm demeanor, humility and professionalism helped bring people together.

"He was one of those rare individuals who could connect people, solve problems and make difficult tasks seem effortless. He always carried himself with humility and an ever-present smile, yet behind that smile was a highly capable professional who contributed immensely to the success of this institution," said Prof. Mukandala.

Beyond the University, Mushi contributed to several national initiatives. Among his notable achievements was his role in facilitating communication and coordination during the process that led to the construction of UDSM's new library through support from the Government of the People's Republic of China.

According to tributes shared during the ceremony, he served as a crucial link between the University, government ministries and the Chinese Embassy, ensuring effective communication and timely follow-up throughout the project.

"Through his quiet dedication in advancing initiatives of great importance to the institution and the nation, he was truly an unsung hero," one tribute noted.

A disciplined and patriotic professional

The Minister for Education, Science and Technology Prof. Adolf Mkenda praised Mushi's contribution to higher education and institutional development, describing him as a disciplined and patriotic professional.

“He was a hardworking young professional who discharged his responsibilities with exceptional commitment, discipline and integrity. His contribution to the University and the higher education sector will not be forgotten”, said Prof. Mkenda.

Prof. Kitila Mkumbo echoed similar sentiments, describing the late Mushi as dependable, diligent and deeply committed to excellence.

"Through his professionalism and commitment to duty, Jackson contributed significantly to strengthening the image and reputation of the University of Dar es Salaam. His legacy will continue to inspire many people within and beyond the institution”, said Prof. Mkumbo.

Perhaps the most emotional moments came through personal testimonies from colleagues who worked closely with him.

Many remembered his trademark smile, his willingness to help regardless of the hour and his ability to remain calm under pressure. Others reflected on his final days, recalling how he had recently celebrated his birthday with colleagues and later hosted a dinner gathering attended by friends and family, an occasion that many now view as a final farewell.

The eulogy also revealed that Mushi's final public assignment was the successful coordination of Cluster I of UDSM's 56th Graduation Ceremony held on 25 May 2026, a responsibility he carried out with the same dedication that defined his career.

Shortly afterwards, he travelled to Mbeya on official University duties. While returning to Dar es Salaam to assist with activities of the Mwalimu Nyerere Intellectual Festival, the vehicle in which he was travelling was involved in a fatal road accident, bringing to an abrupt end a life devoted to service.

A loyal colleague, a trusted friend, a devoted family man

As tributes continued to pour in from across the country and on social media, a common theme emerged: Jackson Mushi was not remembered merely for what he did, but for how he treated people.

He was remembered as a loyal colleague, a trusted friend, a devoted family man, a consummate professional and a servant leader whose greatest strength was his ability to make others feel supported, respected and valued.

As the University community mourns his passing, it also celebrates a life that embodied the values of dedication, integrity, humility and excellence.

Jackson Isdory Mushi will be laid to rest on 2 June 2026 in Usseri Village, Rombo District, Kilimanjaro Region.

Though his voice has fallen silent, the legacy he leaves behind—in the institutions he helped strengthen, the lives he touched and the countless successes he quietly made possible—will continue to resonate throughout the University of Dar es Salaam and beyond for generations to come.
