The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) has been praised for its continued leadership in research and innovation, with its work increasingly delivering practical solutions to societal challenges and contributing to Tanzania's socio-economic development.
The commendation was made by the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade), Prof. Ulingeta O. L. Mbamba, during his visit to the University's exhibition booth at the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as Sabasaba, where he toured a range of research outputs, technologies, and innovations developed by the University.
Speaking after the tour, Prof. Mbamba said UDSM's innovations demonstrate the critical role that universities play in advancing national development by translating research into solutions that directly benefit communities.
"These are the kinds of research initiatives that ensure our country continues to progress. The innovations being developed are aligned with the pace of today's development," he said.
Among the innovations that particularly impressed him was a milk preservation technology that maintains high calcium content, helping to preserve an essential nutrient for human health. He said the innovation exemplifies how research can address everyday challenges while improving livelihoods and creating value for society.
Prof. Mbamba further noted that achieving the aspirations of Tanzania's National Development Vision 2050 will require sustained investment in education, research, and trade, describing the three sectors as fundamental drivers of economic transformation and global competitiveness.
"If we are to realise Vision 2050, we must continue investing in research, education and trade. These are the pillars that will strengthen our economy and position Tanzania to compete globally," he emphasized.
He also encouraged young people, particularly students and graduates, to visit the UDSM exhibition booth to explore the University's academic programmes, research projects, technologies, and innovation ecosystem.
"I encourage young people to take advantage of this opportunity to learn from these innovations. Exposure to research and technology will inspire them to become innovators themselves, improve their employability and create opportunities for self-employment," he said.
Through its participation in this year's Sabasaba exhibition, UDSM is showcasing a broad portfolio of research findings, technologies, and innovations in health, agriculture, industry, environmental management, information and communication technology (ICT), and community development. The exhibition provides an important platform for strengthening partnerships between the University, government institutions, industry, development partners, and the public in advancing research-driven national development.
