By Selemani Nambimbi, CMU

The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is using the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as Sabasaba, to demonstrate its commitment to inclusive higher education by showcasing the services offered through its Special Needs Support Centre.

At the University's pavilion at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds, the Centre is highlighting the range of academic and support services available to students with disabilities and other special educational needs, while raising public awareness of UDSM's efforts to ensure equitable access to quality higher education.

Officials from the Centre said the exhibition provides an opportunity for prospective students, parents and other stakeholders to learn how the University supports students with diverse learning needs from admission through graduation.

“The Centre for Students with Special Needs is responsible for identifying students with special needs, including those with visual impairments, hearing impairments, intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities, assessing their individual requirements and providing appropriate assistive devices and support services free of charge to facilitate their academic and daily learning activities”, Ms. Magdalena Msigwa from the Centre said.

Ms. Msigwa explained that the Centre works closely with academic departments and administrative units to ensure students receive the support they need to participate fully in teaching, learning and other campus activities.

Services provided by the Centre include the assessment of individual support needs, provision of assistive devices and learning aids, and coordination of academic support tailored to each student's circumstances. These services are offered at no cost to all registered UDSM students with special needs as part of the University's commitment to promoting equal access to education.

According to the Centre, the initiative reflects UDSM's broader vision of creating an inclusive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to excel regardless of physical, sensory or intellectual challenges.

Visitors to the UDSM pavilion have shown strong interest in the University's inclusive education initiatives, with many seeking information on the support systems available for students with disabilities. The exhibition has also enabled prospective students and parents to better understand the University's commitment to removing barriers to higher education.

Through its participation in the 50th DITF, UDSM continues to showcase its achievements in teaching, research, innovation and community engagement while demonstrating practical initiatives that promote social inclusion and contribute to national development. The exhibition reinforces the University's position as a leading institution dedicated to providing quality, accessible and inclusive higher education for all.
