Austria Strengthens Academic Diplomacy with Landmark Visit to UDSM

By Yolanda Massawe, DICA

The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) has taken a significant step in advancing its global engagement agenda following a high-level visit by Hon. Dr. Hannah Liko, Deputy Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria.

The visit underscored Austria’s growing commitment to strengthening academic and diplomatic ties with Tanzania, particularly through strategic collaboration with leading higher learning institutions.

Dr. Liko was accompanied by Hon. Dr. Christian Fellner and Hon. Naimi S.H. Azizi, signalling a strong and coordinated effort to deepen bilateral cooperation.

On behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. William A. L. Anangisye, the Deputy Vice Chancellor-Academic, Prof. Rose Upor, received the delegation alongside a team of college principals, school deans, and heads of departments for high-level discussions.

At the centre of the engagement was the introduction of Austria’s Africa Strategy, a forward-looking framework designed to enhance partnerships across the continent. Key priority areas highlighted during the discussions included peace and security, migration and mobility, and expanded access to scholarships.

The delegation also introduced Africa UniNet as a strategic platform for fostering joint research, academic exchange, and institutional collaboration between African and Austrian universities.

Both sides explored opportunities to further elevate the quality of education through increased scholarship schemes, enhanced student and staff mobility—particularly under the Erasmus Programme—and deeper cultural integration.

Discussions also emphasised the importance of developing tailored approaches to teaching the German language within UDSM programmes to better facilitate academic exchange and cross-cultural engagement.

The visit marks a notable milestone in UDSM’s ongoing efforts to expand its international footprint, while positioning itself as a hub for global academic partnerships.

The Austrian delegation reaffirmed its readiness to support collaborative initiatives, noting that while universities operate autonomously, Austria remains committed to enabling meaningful and mutually beneficial cooperation.

This engagement reinforces the shared vision between Austria and Tanzania to unlock new opportunities for students, researchers, and institutions through sustained academic diplomacy and innovation-driven partnerships.
