The University of Dar es Salaam has advanced Tanzania’s gender equality agenda with the launch of the Binti Jasiri UDSM Platform, as the Minister for Community Development, Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Hon. Dr. Dorothy Gwajima, described the initiative as a strategic national investment in empowering young women.
Speaking at Nkrumah Hall, Dr. Gwajima emphasized that empowering young women is central to the country’s socio-economic transformation, commending the University and the Dar es Salaam University Students' Organisation for establishing a platform that directly responds to real challenges facing female students.
“Binti Jasiri is not a one-day intervention; it is the beginning of a sustained movement to cultivate a generation of women who are visionary, resilient and capable of transforming society,” she declared, drawing strong applause from a diverse audience of students, academics, policymakers and development partners.
Positioning the initiative within the broader national development framework, Dr. Gwajima emphasized that women’s empowerment must be treated as both a social responsibility and an economic strategy.
“Tanzania’s growth trajectory depends on women who are educated, confident and ready to take leadership positions across all sectors,” she said, adding that investing in young women yields long-term benefits for families, communities, and the national economy.
Her remarks set the tone for the event, placing the Binti Jasiri platform at the intersection of policy, education, and economic empowerment. The initiative, anchored within DARUSO and led by the Office of the Vice President under Joyce Semkuyu, is designed to address persistent gender barriers through structured mentorship, leadership incubation, entrepreneurship development and academic support.
Dr. Gwajima further reinforced the importance of translating such initiatives into tangible outcomes, urging stakeholders to ensure that the platform delivers measurable and lasting impact. Her emphasis on sustained investment, practical support systems and cross-sector collaboration elevated the initiative from a campus programme to a national development model.
Her tour of student-led entrepreneurship exhibitions, featuring ventures in food production, cosmetics and digital services, offered a practical illustration of the potential she described.
“These innovations demonstrate that when young women are given opportunity and support, they do not just participate; they lead,” she observed.
Environment for inclusive student development
From an institutional perspective, UDSM leadership reaffirmed its commitment to creating an enabling environment for inclusive student development. The Director of Students Services, Dr. Paulina Mabuga, noted that the University’s mission extends beyond academic instruction to shaping responsible and empowered citizens.
“Initiatives such as Binti Jasiri are central to our agenda of ensuring that every student is supported to realize their full potential,” she said.
Student leadership echoed this vision, with DARUSO President Emanuel William describing the platform as a strategic intervention aligned with national gender priorities.
“Binti Jasiri represents a shift toward structured empowerment, ensuring that female students are fully integrated into leadership and innovation ecosystems,” he noted.
Similarly, DARUSO Chief Secretary Maria Felix emphasized the importance of strong implementation frameworks to sustain impact. “We are putting in place systems that will ensure the platform delivers measurable and long-term results”.
As Tanzania continues to pursue inclusive growth and social transformation, the launch of Binti Jasiri signals a renewed focus on unlocking the potential of young women as drivers of change. With strong policy backing, institutional commitment and student leadership at its core, the platform is poised to become a powerful engine for shaping the country’s next generation of leaders.
