Professor Godius Kahyarara, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport has called on universities to uphold the highest standards of quality education, saying academic excellence remains the foundation for producing graduates capable of driving Tanzania's socio-economic transformation.
Prof. Kahyarara, a Professor of Economics, and a distinguished alumnus and former academic at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), made the remarks during his visit to the University of Dar es Salaam exhibition pavilion at the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) - Sabasaba.
At the pavilion, he toured research projects, technological innovations, community outreach initiatives, and academic services showcased by the University.
Reflecting on his longstanding association with UDSM – as both a student and later a member of academic staff at the School of Economics – Prof. Kahyarara said the University's commitment to quality education had shaped his professional journey and enabled him to contribute to national development in academia and public service.
"Quality in education must remain our top priority and should never be compromised. When universities maintain high academic standards, they produce graduates who possess not only knowledge but also critical thinking skills, professionalism, and the ability to solve real societal challenges. That is the kind of human capital Tanzania needs to sustain its development”, said Prof. Kahyarara.
He said institutions of higher learning have a responsibility to continually adapt their teaching, research, and innovation to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world while maintaining academic excellence.
"Universities must continue producing graduates who are innovative, ethical, and globally competitive. Beyond awarding degrees, they should nurture leadership, creativity, and problem-solving skills that prepare young people to contribute meaningfully to the country's economic and social development”, he said.
UDSM’s growing emphasis on research, innovation, and community engagement
During his visit, Prof. Kahyarara commended UDSM for its growing emphasis on research, innovation, and community engagement, noting that the projects on display demonstrated the University's commitment to translating knowledge into practical solutions for national development.
"It is encouraging to see research that responds directly to the needs of society and industry. This is how universities make a lasting contribution – by generating knowledge and innovations that improve lives, strengthen institutions, and support economic growth”, he said.
He also encouraged students and young researchers to embrace excellence, continuous learning, and innovation, describing them as essential attributes for success in today's knowledge-driven economy.
Prof. Kahyarara's visit underscored the enduring relationship between UDSM and its alumni, many of whom continue to provide leadership in academia, government, business, and other strategic sectors both nationally and internationally.
As Tanzania's premier university, UDSM continues to invest in quality teaching, cutting-edge research, innovation, and strategic partnerships that prepare graduates to address complex national and global challenges while contributing to the country's sustainable socio-economic development.
