Department of Economics

                

About the Department

The mission of the department is to accumulate, impart and exchange knowledge in the field of Economics through research and publications, teaching and learning, generating and taking part in national and international policy debates, as well as providing advisory or consulting services to the government and civil society. Also provides consultancy services to private institutions, government ministries, Departments; Agencies; parastatals and international organizations.

 

Degree Programs

 

Undergraduate Program:

  • Bachelor of Arts Economics (Three years)
  • Bachelor of Arts Economics and Statistics(Three years)

 

Postgraduate Programs:

  • Masters of Arts Economics (MA. Full Time range from 18 to 24 months);
  • Masters of Arts in Applied Economics (Evening Program - range from 18 to 24 months);
  • Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Economics (Coursework and Dissertation -4 years).

 

Admission criteria

Admission undergraduate

Minimum of two principal passes of which must be in  advanced certificate of secondary education examination (ACSEE).  At least a subsidiary in advanced mathematics or basic applied mathematics or a credit in O-level mathematics.  BA Economics and statistics at least two principal passes of which must be in advanced certificate of secondary education examination (ACSEE).

 

MA Economics

Good undergraduate degree with sufficient coverage in Economics. 

PhD Economics

A candidate for admission PhD must have a good MA degree from recognised university with sufficient Macroeconomics and Micro economics

 

 

Research and Consultancy

The Department have established centres which deals with research, Training and consultancies

 

Center for Economic Research and Policy (CERP)

The Center for Economic Research and Policy (CERP) in the Department of Economics (DoE), University of Dar es Salaam was establish as a way of bolstering economic research through an improved institutional arrangement with DoE.  It is the aim of the DoE that all research effort be coordinated under the rubric of the CERP.  The objectives of CERP include (a) carrying out research in support of economic and social development of Tanzania; (b) to carry out multi-disciplinary research with the aim to capture multi-stakeholders from both within and outside Tanzania; (c) initiate writing proposals for funding;  (d) develop capacity of junior researchers; and (e) publish the research findings in various outlets. 

 

Environment for Development Tanzania (EfDT)

Environment for Development Tanzania (EfDT) is set up as part of Environment for Development (EfD) initiative, an international network which is currently funded by the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (SIDA). The EfD is an international capacity-building programme in environmental economics, focusing on research, policy advice and training/teaching. EfD program is a network of centers in Tanzania, Kenya, Central America, China, Ethiopia, South Africa and the Gothenburg University which coordinate the global efforts. The Research Themes at EfDT are: climate change, agriculture, Environment poverty policy analysis, Agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

Consultancy services

The entire academic staffs are highly qualified and experienced in various specialized fields in Monitoring and Evaluation, economic management, environmental and natural resources, impact evaluation, policy analysis and implementation strategies, other areas are Labour Economics, Industrial Economics; Transport Economics, Monetary Economics, Financial Economics, Public Sector Economics and Agriculture Economics, banking, , marketing and pricing, gender analysis, population dynamics, micro-finance and micro enterprises, regional project appraisal economics.

 

Publications

  • Economics Department working paper series

Working Paper Series is a forum for stimulating discussion and eliciting feedback on ongoing and recently completed research and policy studies undertaken by the Department of economics and other members of the University of Dar es Salaam staff, consultants, or resource persons. The working series aim to enhance the knowledge on Tanzania and African development and policy challenges; strengthen analytical rigor and quality of papers. Increase accessibility of research information to the stakeholders.

Tanzania Economic Review (TER)

Tanzania economic review is a biannually journal that publishes working paper series from the department of economics and authors around the world. This journal has a team of national and international Editors consists of Editor in chief, Editors, Editorial board and Managing Editors

 

Scholarships/Fellowships

The department has two scholarships these are:

  • The collaborative scholarship between the Department and African Economic Research Consortium Awards MA and PhD Fellowships.
  • The department of Economics in collaborative with Bank of Tanzania Award MA Scholarship for the best student in BA Economics performance in Fist class (Gilman Rutihinda Award).
  • The department of economics has over the past two years got some scholarships for MA and PhD programmes from the Government of Tanzania through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs.

The Department of Economics offers degree programmes in the field of Economics called Bachelor of Arts in and Economics and Statistics called Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Statistics.  The department also offers degrees of Masters of Arts in Economics and Masters of Arts in Applied Economics as well as the PhD in economics.

 

Bachelor of Arts in Economics

Students are required to take all the core courses. Shaded totals represent the minimum required credits per semester basing on the core courses. A student may choose one additional optional course from the list provided under a relevant semester and not from elsewhere.

 

Compulsory Second-Year Practical Training (AS 299) conducted for 8 weeks during the long vacation, i.e., outside the two classroom semesters, is not included in the total minimum/maximum count.
