Professor Abel G.M. Ishumi

Born in 1943 in Kagera Region. Abel Gilbert Ishumi is a renowned professor of education specializing in the foundations of education, philosophy of education, sociology of education and teacher education to mention only a few. Professor Ishumi was employed by the University of Dar es Salaam in the 1970’s. He obtained his Bachelor degree in the then University of East Africa. Being intellectually capable, he secured a place of study at Harvard University in the USA and graduated in 1970. Despite many attempts and convincing opportunities from friends and relatives, Professor Ishumi decided to return to serve his country with patriotism and enthusiasm. He completed his PhD at the University of Dar es Salaam in 1975. He became a professor in 1982. In 1985, Professor Ishumi made a ground breaking professorial inaugural lecture titled: “Teach All Things to All Men?” (Professorial Inaugural Lecture Series No. 37). Professor Ishumi has extensively published in the areas of education, community development, health and economy, policies and culture and education.  He has also written a number of journal articles, conference papers and books singly and also co-authored.
