Partnership Launches Ambitious Rooftop Solar Power Project at UDSM

By Renancy Remmy, CMU

A new partnership is launching a Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plant at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), following a formal agreement signed between the university and EUSMS gGmbH, a non-profit company based in Munich, Germany.

The agreement was officially signed at UDSM by Vice-Chancellor Prof. William A. L. Anangisye and EUSMS gGmbH Chief Executive Officer Mr Kerim Bilgic. Their joint commitment marks a significant step towards advancing renewable energy, education, and sustainability at the university.

This partnership builds on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two institutions in September 2025, which established a framework for collaboration in education, research, entrepreneurship, and development aid. The new agreement focuses specifically on installing solar power systems on university rooftops and parking areas.

Prof. Anangisye emphasised that the project’s primary objective is to jointly develop a comprehensive proposal to secure funding and install a solar PV system that will provide clean and reliable energy to the university. “Beyond energy generation, the project will offer valuable training opportunities,” he said.

UDSM students and staff will actively participate in all stages of the project, from feasibility studies and system design to construction, gaining practical skills in solar energy development.

Supporting Tanzania’s national climate goals

The initiative also supports Tanzania’s national climate goals and aligns with the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, which target a 30–35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Once operational, the solar system is expected to reduce electricity costs and improve power reliability on campus, capitalising on Dar es Salaam’s strong solar potential.

The project will be implemented in three phases. The Preparation Phase will involve feasibility studies, technical designs, and cost estimates. The Fund Solicitation Phase will focus on securing financial support from international and local partners, including the European Union, German government agencies, and Tanzanian institutions. The final Construction and Implementation Phase will cover procurement, installation, and ongoing project management.

This partnership underscores UDSM’s growing leadership in sustainability and innovation. The Rooftop Solar PV Project is not only an investment in clean energy but also a platform for capacity building, research, and global climate action.
