Prof. Saudin Mwakaje Wins 2025 Best Patent Lawyer Award

The University of Dar es Salaam’s Chief Corporate Counsel and Secretary to Council, Prof. Saudin Mwakaje, has been named the Winner of the 2025 Best Patent Lawyer Award by Adams & Adams, one of Africa’s leading intellectual property law firms.

The award was officially presented on 11 September 2025 in Pretoria, South Africa, in recognition of Prof. Mwakaje’s outstanding and sustained contributions to the advancement of intellectual property rights across Africa.

In bestowing the honour, Adams & Adams praised Prof. Mwakaje for his practical expertise and insightful guidance in patent law and its interface with other areas of intellectual property—qualities that made him the standout recipient of this year’s award.

Reacting to the news, the University of Dar es Salaam’s Deputy Vice Chancellor – Research, Prof. Nelson Boniface, said the institution is immensely proud of Prof. Mwakaje’s achievements, which not only highlight his personal excellence but also showcase the University’s enduring contribution to legal scholarship and practice in Tanzania and beyond.

He added, “His recognition at the continental level is a testament to the University’s commitment to nurturing thought leaders whose work impacts society at large.”

Adams & Adams, an internationally renowned African law firm with more than a century of experience, is widely respected for its expertise in intellectual property, commercial law, real estate, and dispute resolution. 

The firm has earned both local and global recognition, including being named Africa Firm of the Year at the Managing Intellectual Property (IP) Awards for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) in April 2025, held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

The firm also recently secured the titles of South Africa Patent Firm of the Year, while Lisa van Zuydam, a Senior Associate, was honoured as South Africa Rising Star of the Year for her growing impact in the intellectual property arena.
